When released into the bloodstream, epinephrine acts on nearly all body tissues to maximize physical performance:
- Heart: Increases heart rate and the force of contractions to pump more oxygenated blood.
- Lungs: Relaxes airway muscles (bronchodilation) to allow for deeper, faster breathing.
- Liver: Triggers the breakdown of glycogen into glucose, providing a sudden burst of energy.
- Eyes: Dilates the pupils to let in more light and improve visual awareness.
INDICATIONS:
Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for several critical conditions:
- Anaphylaxis: It is the only medication that can reverse life-threatening allergic reactions by opening airways and raising dangerously low blood pressure.
- Cardiac Arrest: Used during CPR to help restart the heart and restore circulation.
